2009 INDUCTEE

Dr. Ronald Scott
Category: Former Participant
Years: 1958, 1959

Inducted April 23, 2009

Ronald Scott (M.D., Ph.D.) had a distinguished career as a scientist and physician. After competing on Hi-Q teams in 1958 and 1959, he graduated as Valedictorian of Interboro's class of 1959. Ron attended Swarthmore College and the University of Illinois He accepted a faculty position at the University of Virginia, but was quickly lured to RCA's Sarnoff Research Lab in Princeton as a research scientist. Ron published about 40 scientific papers and invented technology for satellite monitoring that is still used by NASA. In his mid-30's, Ron decided to apply his expertise in radiology to the field of medicine. He entered medical school, taking his M.D. at the University of Buffalo, with a specialty in radiological oncology. He then joined the faculty at the University of Washington, where he served for nearly a decade. He was invited to move from academia to clinical practice in Los Angeles, and was subsequently offered his own radiology practice in San Diego.

Ron quickly developed a reputation as a skilled and caring physician, and his reputation spread to California's Imperial Valley, where the practice of medicine was in a decidedly less advanced state. El Centro Hospital requested that Ron come to their facility once a week to serve the local population. This commute was enabled by Ron's being a pilot of his own twin turboprop plane, replacing a 2-hour drive with a 20-minute flight. After serving in this capacity for two years, Ron and his wife Margaret decided that the needs of an underserved community took precedence over the comfort of their lives. In 1997 they determined to build an independent facility in El Centro: the Imperial Valley Cancer Center (IVCC). It was an inspiration that transformed medical care in the Valley. The stunning cultural and financial success of the IVCC attracted physicians from around the state, forming a medical cluster with IVCC at its core.

Ron and Margaret died on March 11, 2004 when their plane inexplicably dived into the Napa River as they approached their vacation home in Napa California. The outpouring of the community upon hearing of this tragedy was stirring. Hundreds came to the services, offering a litany of testimonials of how Ron had restored their lives when they thought they were lost to disease. Physicians told of how the now-robust medical community in El Centro grew from Ron and Margaret's compassion, skill, and vision. The IVCC was formally dedicated to Ron and Margaret in perpetuity.

Ron took the intellectual gifts that earned him a place on the former Scott's Hi-Q, and dedicated them to a life of scholarly pursuit and public service.
