Hall of Honor

The Delco Hi-Q Hall of Honor was created in 2005 to honor past Hi-Q participants, and those who have made an outstanding contribution to the Delco Hi-Q program. The Hall of Honor will grow to include participants from each decade of Hi-Q.

2011 INDUCTEES

Elizabeth Clyma
Category: Former Participant, Penncrest High School
Years: 1985-1986

Inducted May 5, 2011

Elizabeth “Liz” Clyma is a 1986 graduate of Penncrest High School, where she was a member of the field hockey and lacrosse teams, as well as Hi-Q. Passionate about the study of foreign languages and cultures, Liz studied SpanisChristine Fizzano Cannonh and French throughout high school, attended the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for International Studies, and lived in northern Norway as an exchange student. She is a member of the Rose Tree Media Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame.

Liz holds a BA in Social Studies from Harvard University, an MBA in Finance from Wharton Business School, and an MA in Russian Area Studies and International Economics from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.

After graduating from Harvard, Liz moved to the Soviet Union in 1990 to develop investment and trading opportunities for Western businesses in an unprecedented era of economic liberalization under Mikhail Gorbachev. Experiencing the fall of communism and the USSR and Russia’s early, painful years of transition to free market economy, Liz became
keenly interested in issues of international economic development, which became the focus of her graduate studies.

She is currently a Deputy Director in Global Health at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where she heads up strategy and operations for the HIV and Tuberculosis programs. The mission of the Global Health Program is to ensure that lifesaving advances in health are created and shared with those who need them most, in developing countries. Liz now resides in Seattle, WA with her husband and two darling daughters. She makes frequent trips back to Media and the Jersey shore to visit family and friends.


Dr. Giridhar Mallya
Category: Former Participant, Garnet Valley High School
Years: 1993-1995

Inducted May 5, 2011

Giridhar Mallya, MD, MSHP, is a 1995 graduate of Garnet Valley High School and a three year member of the Delco Hi-Q team.“Gidi,” as he was known on the team, was first in his class and a leader of the Hi-Q team.

He has been the Director of Policy and Planning for the Philadelphia Christine Fizzano CannonDepartment of Public Health since October 2008. In this position, Dr. Mallya helps to define public health priorities for the city, coordinates the Department’s research and data analysis activities, and works with key leadership—including the Board of Health and the Air Pollution Control Board—to set policies and develop regulations. He is also the Primary Investigator for Philadelphia’s CDC-funded Communities Putting Prevention to Work Tobacco Policy& Control and Nutrition & Physical Activity initiatives.

After high school, Dr. Mallya graduated from Brown University Medical School in Providence, RI, and completed a residency in Family and Community Medicine at Thomas
Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. Following his residency, Dr. Mallya was a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania where he received a Master’s Degree in Health Policy Research.

As a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar, Dr. Mallya's research and policy work focused on access to primary care, particularly for vulnerable populations. He has investigated the impact of high-deductible health plans on primary care delivery and has presented nationally on this issue. He has also worked with community health centers and non-profit agencies in Philadelphia to measure primary care access through GIS-based methods to enable informed public health planning. This work has encouraged the
exploration of regional partnerships within the city to organize safety net services more rationally.
